The sky is gray, the air is cold and winter is dragging on. The holidays are over and the Christmas spirit has left the building. I’ve been packing up decorations, taking down my Christmas tree, getting pine needles all over the place and dreaming of sweet summertime. The post-holiday blues hit me hard this year but I know I’m not alone; seasonal depression affects a lot of people. We’re not that weak though, right? Let’s change the narrative and get motivated for this upcoming year.
Last year flew by and I know this winter will too. Instead of being sad about the cold weather or the end of the holidays, let’s make the absolute most of this time. We want to be able to enjoy spring and summer and that means preparing for it. I asked you guys in my last blog to think about what habits you want to change and to make a plan. Have you been implementing your plan and sticking to it? If not, go back and think about why you have not been successful or how you can change your plan to make it more attainable.
One of my resolutions for this year is time management. I do not like getting up early and I end up having so much to do after work that I don’t get any time to relax before bedtime. This year I want to wake up each morning by 6AM and get to the gym. I usually don’t get home from work until about seven, I rush to the gym, get home, make myself dinner quickly, shower, clean up and by that time it is late and I am exhausted. It is a small resolution but it has already made such a positive difference in my life. I can relax after work, spend time cooking a good dinner, read my book of the month and wind down before I close my eyes for the night. I have been able to stick to this plan and change my habit because I made a realistic goal. I already go to the gym daily so the only tough part for me was waking up early.
Maybe you have set a path for yourself that is not attainable at this point in your wellness journey and that is okay. Break your resolution down into smaller goals that you know without a doubt you can achieve. This winter is the time for you to put your head down and focus so by the time spring and summer roll around, you are ready. You will be able to truly enjoy the warmer months because you will be happier, healthier and closer to reaching your full potential.
Before the end of the month, let’s connect and share where we are with our resolution progress. I have always found that sharing with friends and family not only holds me accountable but it is so motivating to get advice from someone you can trust and confide in.
